In the late 1990s, I had a friend who had a small webserver at his house in Indiana. We were using his machine to host various websites, and soon demand was high enough that he began collocating his server with a local ISP.
In 2000, I became a reseller for his hosting service and began offering "unlimited storage and bandwidth" accounts for $10/month. Unfortunately, after a few years, various problems with the ISP and other reliability issues caused me to need to migrate my accounts somewhere else. (Scott, thanks for all the great years, though! Look what you got me into?)
For much of the past two decades, I have been leasing space and bandwidth from a high-reliability network provider. Over the years I have been able to gradually lower pricing for those who host with me (though the days of "unlimited" stuff is long gone). The reason I got in to this was because of two photo gallery sites I run - AtTheFaire.com (for Renaissance festivals) and DisneyFans.com (for theme parks). Both sites collectively contain well over 150,000 of my digital photos, and I needed to find a place to host them all without going broke. Reselling my extra space ended up being the only way I could afford to keep these sites online.
